"It’s heartbreaking to know that so many people feel misunderstood or alone when they’re already experiencing a difficult situation."
- Dr Naveen Puri, medical director at Bupa Insurance

Of those surveyed (1,001 adults diagnosed with, or self-identifying as currently living with, depression), 51% feel misunderstood by loved ones. The majority (65%) described it as an ongoing fight in their minds, and the same proportion said they feel disconnected from society.

In terms of the impact depression has on day-to-day life, almost seven in ten (68%) said they feel as though nothing will ever get better. Worryingly, more than a third (37%) regularly avoid visiting family and friends.

Addressing the misconception that depression is ‘something people can simply overcome’, 71% said it’s not something you can ‘snap out of’, and the same percentage expressed that their struggles are often invisible to others.

70% reported significant disruption to their motivation, ability to sleep, and physical health.

“Depression, the invisible struggle that sadly many of us face personally or know someone who has. It’s heartbreaking to know that so many people feel misunderstood or alone when they’re already experiencing a difficult situation.

“Our research highlights how depression is a lonely cycle, reinforced by misunderstanding – how tough daily life can be for those affected. But small habits, strong social connections, and medical support can help to reverse the cycle. It’s important to listen, learn, and offer genuine support,” said Dr Naveen Puri, medical director at Bupa Insurance.
